10th Title for Lee, 1st for Goh & Lim at Malaysia Open

20 January 2014

World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei (VTZFSHB01LTD) captured his tenth (seventh consecutive) title at the Malaysian Open,  joined in the winners’ circle by fellow Malaysian Goh V Shem (ARC11) and Lim Khim Wah (VTZF), who won their first ever Superseries title in front of their home crowd.

The men’s singles final was a repeat of the Superseries Finals last month, with Chong Wei and Tommy Sugiarto (ARC11) facing off. Tommy lead the first game by 19-18, but Chong Wei zeroed-in at the end with a barrage of accurate shots and a final powerful attack, clinching a victory in the first game by 21-19. Chong Wei dominated the second game, scoring fourteen consecutive points with great speed. The final score was 21-19 21-9. He has stood undefeated at Malaysia Open since 2008, the same year his nearly uninterrupted reign as the world No. 1’s started.

The 24-year-old Malaysian duo, V Shem and Khim Wah, advanced to their first Superseries final. Their impressive campaign commenced in the first round, winning against Mathias Boe (VT80)/Carsten Mogensen (ARC-FBSHBF1NLTD). The final placed the two against the formidable Chinese duo of Biao Chai and Hong Wei, with the first game see-sawing between the two pairs. At 19-all, V Shem/Khim Wah took control with a speedy drive shot rally to finish the game at 21-19. The opponents led for a majority of the second game, but the Malaysian remained aggressive. At 17-18, they scored four times in a row, taking the game, and the match. It was the first time a Malaysian pair has won the men’s doubles title at the Malaysia Open since 2010, when Koo Kien Keat(NR-ZSPSHBF1NLTD) and Tan Boon Heong(NR-ZSPSHBF1NLTD) received the title.

In mixed doubles, Christinna Pedersen (NR800SHB-01LX)/Joachim Fischer Nielsen defeated the No. 1 seed Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei of China, with 21-10 21-12 in the semifinal. They were the runners-up after playing a tough final against another Chinese duo, Xu Chen/Ma Jin in the final, the game ending at 21-11 17-21 21-13.

Japan’s Ayaka Takahashi /Misaki Matsutomo were also runners-up in women’s doubles after a nail-biting match against China’s Bao Yixin/Tang Jinhua, ending at 21-19 14-21 21-13.
