Fourth Title for Lee, First for Ahsan & Setiawan

22 September 2013

It was a historical day at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on September 22nd. After Taufik Hidayat’s retirement ceremony in front of Japanese fans, World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei (VTZFSHB01LTD) broke the record to capture 4th title of YONEX OPEN JAPAN by defeating local hero Kenichi Tago (NR-ZSP), 23-21 21-17. The world champion Mohammad Ahsan (ARC-FB,SHBF1NLTD) and Hendra Setiawan (NR800SHBF1NLTD) won the final against China’s Biao Chai and Wei Hong by 22-20 21-16 for their first title there as a duo. In the women’s singles, Akane Yamaguchi of Japan made the Superseries history to be the youngest ever 16-year-old winner after defeating fellow Japanese Shizuka Uchida, 21-15 21-19.

Supported by Malaysian and Japanese fans, Chong Wei and Kenichi played very close first game. Kenichi faced his game point at first, however, Chong Wei improved his game to capture it by 23-21. In the second game, Chong Wei accelerated his gear to dominate the pace of game. After Chong Wei decided the game by winning the second game 21-17, both he and Kenichi showed their gratitude for the support inside the stadium.

Mohammad and Hendra, who have been spending amazing year so far, faced Chinese duo, Biao Chai and Wei Hong. There are a lot of rapid rallies between them and they both put huge pressure around the net as possible as they can. It was Indonesian duo who put more pressure on the opponent to make more errors. Mohammad and Hendra attacked fast enough to win the title with a score of 22-20 21-16.

A 16-year-old Akane’s winning campaign ended as the best result as Japanese player. Since it was the all Japanese final, Japan was supposed to secure their first title ever in tournament’s history. The silver medalist of World Junior Championships 2012, Akane dominated the first game with 21-15. Shizuka had a good start in the second game, however, porker-faced Akane was so steady to take the title by finishing the second game 21-19.

We appreciate all the support for this tournament from the world. YONEX OPEN JAPAN 2014 will be held from June 10th to 15th, 2014. Please look forward to watching it next year again.
