Lee Chong Wei and English spirit shine in first round

05 March 2014

World No. 1, Lee Chong Wei (VTZF2, SHB01LTD) was in sumptuous form during day 2 at the YONEX All England. Chong Wei, who was never behind in the match, defeated Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk, 21-15, 21-17.

A dominant Chong Wei took Game 1 with a glorious hairpin shot. He followed this with a near perfect demonstration of defensive play in Game 2, which disturbed Saensomboonsuk’s attacking rhythm. Chong Wei sealed the match with a series of powerful and non-returnable smashes and now moves into round 2.

Inspired by the passionate partisan crowd inside the National Indoor Arena, the very best of English badminton talent showed that they aren’t just here to make up the numbers.

Rajiv Ouseph (NR800) produced one of the finest performances of his career, defeating 7th seed and 2013 Asia Champion, Du Pengyu, 21-16, 11-21, 21-14.

Men’s Doubles duo Chris Adcock (VTZF2) and Andrew Ellis (VT80) overcame a nervous start to beat Jui Wei Liang and Kuan Hao Liao in 3 games, 18-21, 21-13, 22-20.

Women’s Doubles pair Gabrielle Adcock (VT80, SHB-01LX) and Lauren Smith (VTZF) took a close encounter with Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek, 21-17, 13-21, 21-15.

It was a busy and emotional day for Chris and Gabby Adcock as, for the first time at the All England, they competed in the Mixed Doubles as husband and wife. A quick start in Game 1 and determined, gritty performance in Game 3 saw them defeat Irfan Fadhilah and Weni Anggraini, 21-9, 17-21, 21-14.

The English stars took time out before the tournament to give their thoughts and opinions on the YONEX All England, and how they thought they would get on.
