Nehwal Crowned as First Female Australian Open Superseries Champion
- 30 June 2014
This year marked the first time the Australian Open has been held as a Superseries tournament, and YONEX’s Saina Nehwal (NANORAY 900) of India was the tournament’s first female champion, defeating Spanish Carolina Marin (NANORAY Z-SPEED, SHBF1NLTD), 21-18 21-11. Michael Fuchs (VOLTRIC 80, SHBSC6iEX)/Birgit Michels (NANORAY 700FX, SHBSC4LX), Ayaka Takahashi/Misaki Matsutomo were runners-up.
After winning in a neck-and-neck semifinal against No. 1 seed Wang Shixian by 21-19 16-21 21-15, Saina faced 2014 Europe Champion Carolina in the final. It was an all-NANORAY final, as the two engaged in high–speed rallies right from the very beginning. Carolina boasted her superb hairpin shot and smash, but Saina’s relentlessness overwhelmed Carolina throughout the match. Saina took her first Superseries title in 20 months. Carolina also had a great week, reaching the final by defeating Sung Ji Hyun of Korea and Sindhu P.V. en route.
YONEX is very proud to sponsor three fantastic Superseries events this month—YONEX OPEN JAPAN, the Indonesia Open, and the Australian Open—with equipment. YONEX Canada Open Grand Prix starts today, June 30th and YONEX US Open Grand Prix Gold and YONEX Open Chinese Taipei follow. Don’t miss these other great events!
