Anastasija Sevastova Continues her Streak into the Semifinals

04 September 2018

New York, USA - The ninth day of play opened featuring the Women’s singles quarterfinals where highly competitive Anastasija Sevastova (LAT) faced and defeated last year’s champion Sloane Stephens (USA) in straight sets. Stephen’s powerful strokes and services were not match for Sevastova’s crafty play and ability to adapt to any situation, even utilizing perfectly timed drop shots and lobs. With this win and her doubles advancement into the quarterfinals yesterday, excitement over her possibility taking home both US Open crowns builds!

Her next match will pit her against the 6-time US Open Champion, Serena Williams (USA), in what is shaping up to be a dazzling semifinal matchup.

Team Yonex continues to dominate the doubles field with 3 women advancing into the semifinals. In Women’s doubles, the CoCo Vandeweghe (USA) / Ashleigh Barty (AUS) pair willed their way in straight sets to continue their streak of not dropping a single set on their path to the semifinals. Timea Babos (HUN) / Kristina Mladenovic (FRA) combo proved the brutal heat wave was no problem as they battled back from being down twice in the first set to force a tiebreak. Finding their stride in the tiebreak, they never looked back handily taking the second set. The Mixed Doubles pair of Alicja Rosolska (POL) /Nikola Mektić (CRO) also fought valiantly to claim their place in the semifinals.
