Great Performances from Nick and Angie at Wimbledon 2014
- 30 June 2014
While this weekend at Wimbledon saw some heavy rain delaying and cancelling matches, there was still magic to be seen on the All England Club courts.
Nick Kyrgios (EZONE Ai 98) continues to be unstoppable, and went up against Jiri Vesely in the third round. It was another protracted game for Nick at four sets with an over four hour rain delay in the middle. Despite being down a set, Nick came back after the rain break with a vengeance. Repositioning himself near the baseline, with sharp reflexes and keen assertiveness, Nick played in top form. The more agile of the two on the court, Nick began to command the game, and in the end hit 26 aces, 63 winners, and broke four times. The end of the match saw Nick down on the grass with a giant smile on face, after serving out and winning the match. The final score was, 3-6 6-3 7-5 6-2. "I'm overwhelmed with happiness," said Nick in a comment posted on the official ATP World Tour website. Nick is the youngest player to reach round 4 since 2011.
Women’s doubles saw a match between two Wimbledon semifinalists as Angelique Kerber (VCORE Xi 100) competed against Kirsten Flipkens. Coming back from a set behind, Angelique started to demonstrate some very confident tennis, as she grabbed a 3-0 lead just 10 minutes into the second set. Angelique began to determinedly smack her opponent’s forehands back at her, and took the match in the end at 3-6 6-3 6-2. “I think in the second set I was trying to keep going, to believe in myself that I can turn around the match, and just keep going, be aggressive, and just playing point by point,” said Angelique in a comment on the official Wimbledon website.
Belinda Bencic (EZONE Ai 100, POLYTOUR HS 125) advanced to round 2 in mixed doubles with her partner Martin Klizan against Lukas Rosol/Klara Koukalova. Breaking their opponents five times, the two took the match in straight sets at an overwhelming 6-4 6-0.
