Kerber Advances to Semifinals
- 07 July 2012
On Tuesday, July 3rd, two YONEX players, Angelique Kerber (VCORE 100S) and Sabine Lisicki (VCORE Tour 97) met in the quarterfinals. She was the first German to make it to a Grand Slam quarterfinal match since Steffi Graf faced C. Kohde-Kilsch in Australia in 1989.
Angelique showed solid performance in the first set. She made only two unforced errors and broke three times, winning the set steadily by 6-3. Then in the next set, Angelique got three match points after playing persistently against Sabine's hard shots, but Sabine managed overcome them all three times with her aggressive strokes and win the set with 34 winners. In the decider, Angelique’s stability exceeded Sabine’s offensive play. Angelique closed the match after a defining break in 11th game. The final score was 6-3, 6-7(7), 7-5 and Angelique’s first time reaching the Wimbledon semifinals.
With EZONE Xi 98, No. 17 seed Maria Kirilenko faced No. 3 seed Agnieszka Radwanska. It was a very close match, with Maria losing by 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, however, she played solidly, maximizing the capabilities of the EZONE Xi. Maria especially excelled in her offense against her opponent and she scored 52 winners throughout the match while the Polish player only scored 36 times. She progressed to the final eight in Wimbledon 2012 and exhibited excellent performance.
In the semifinals, Angelique will play against Agnieszka Radwanska for Saturday’s final.
