Kerber Claims Third Career WTA Title in Linz
- 15 October 2013
Two YONEX players, Angelique Kerber (VCORE Xi 100) and Ana Ivanovic (EZONE Ai 98), met in the final at the Generali Ladies Linz last week. Top seeded Angelique captured her first title in this year, which is her third career win in the WTA Tour.
It was the thrilling first set that there were a lot of turnarounds from both sides. Angelique played very well with her powerful ground strokes to take the initiative with a 4-1 lead, but third seeded Ana showed deciding net plays with her clever volley skills to equalize the score, 4-4. In the rollercoaster opening set, Angelique put more pressure against Ana to make more break chances, and captured the set capitalizing on three of nine break points.
The world ten ranked German was also steady in the next set. Although Ana displayed her great fighting spirit to save triple match points in the tenth game, Angelique finally overcame the Serbian player after the tiebreak to claim the title.
Angelique expressed her delight after the match, “I was just trying to stay aggressive in the important moments and I think that was the biggest key to victory at the end. I'm really happy to win my first WTA tournament of the year here,” according to the WTA website.
Following her achievement in Linz, Angelique secured the eighth and final spot at next week’s TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships - Istanbul.
