Monaco Enters Roland Garros 2013 with Düsseldorf Title

Third-seeded Juan Monaco (VCORE Xi 98) captured the inaugural Power Horse Cup trophy in Düsseldorf with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Jarkko Nieminen in the final. It was his eighth ATP World Tour title, and Juan demonstrated his superiority with another straight sets win, meaning that he didn’t lose a single set throughout the tournament.
A delighted Juan expressed his appreciation on his Facebook page: “Happy for the title here in Düsseldorf!! Thanks for your support and your messages!!” He now considers himself ready for the year’s biggest clay court event at Roland Garros.
The main draw was announced on May 24th and the tournament kicked off yesterday. Juan has entered the men’s singles event as the 17th seed, and faces Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain in his opener today. Also Stanislas Wawrinka (VCORE Tour 97) is seeded No. 9 and his first opponent is the Dutchman, Thiemo De Bakker.
Meanwhile, in the women’s singles, two YONEX players won their opening matches. Number 14 seed, Ana Ivanovic (EZONE Xi 98), defeated Petra Martic [6-1, 3-6, 6-3], and No. 32 seed, Sabine Lisicki (VCORE Tour 97, PTGSPN), overcame Sofia Arvidsson in straight sets [6-3, 6-4]. Two VCORE ladies have first-round matches today – tenth seed Caroline Wozniacki (VCORE Xi 100) plays Laura Robson from the U.K., and eighth seed Angelique Kerber (VCORE Xi 100) faces fellow German Mona Barthel. Also competing at Roland Garros as No. 12 seed is Maria Kirilenko (EZONE Xi 98, PTGP125), who takes on Nina Bratchikova in her opener.
