Hlavackova and Zheng Forge a Path to the Doubles Semis
- 05 September 2013
The women’s doubles event at the US Open is fast approaching its climax. Two YONEX doubles specialists, Andrea Hlavackova (RQiS 2 Tour, PTGP125) and Zheng Jie (EZONE Xi 98, PTGSPN)(CHN) advanced to the semifinals on Day 10.
The experienced Czech duo – here Andrea is paired with Lucie Hradecka – competed against the third seeded pairing of Nadia Petrova and Katarina Srebotnik in the quarterfinals. Their aggressive play resulted in 15 break points throughout the match, and the four they converted proved decisive in breaking up the tie. With a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory after 2 hours 38 minutes, the Czech pair heads into the semifinals for the second consecutive year.
Andrea also remains in the mixed doubles competition. Paired with Max Mirnyi of Belarus, she has reached the final against Abigail Spears and Santiago Gonzalez.
China’s Jie and her partner, Sania Mirza of India, secured a resounding victory against the current Wimbledon champions, Su-Wei Hsieh and Shuai Peng, in the quarterfinals. Jie’s pairing came out fighting and never let up, packing in forty winners during a close contest, which proved key to earning four breaks to overcome their tough adversaries. With victory coming in straight sets [6-4 7-6(5)], their defeat of these Grand Slam titleholders sees them through to the last four. Jie has now made the semifinals for the first time since 2010.
