Seeded YONEX Players Progress to Third Round
- 30 August 2013
All seeded YONEX female players advanced to the third round on Day 4 of the US Open. Angelique Kerber (VCORE Xi 100), Ana Ivanovic (EZONE Xi 98), Maria Kirilenko (EZONE Xi 98, PTGP125) and Sabine Lisicki (VCORE Tour 97, PTGSPN) won their second round matches solidly.
This year’s Wimbledon finalist, Sabine, had sufficient superiority in her attack to overpower Argentina’s Paula Ormaechea with eight service aces and 33 winners. Capitalizing on four break points during the match, she overcame her opponent in straight sets [6-2, 6-3].
The No. 8 seed, Angelique, engaged in some hard-hitting rallies with 19-year-old Eugenie Bouchard of Canada in the second round. The world ninth-ranked German steadied herself against a comeback from the young Canadian to notch a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory.
Ana, seeded No. 13, smoothly advanced to the third round, defeating Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania with a 6-2, 6-1 score line. She was pleased with her performance in this match, reflecting: “She’s a tough player. She played well and strikes some really good backhands. I was really happy that I managed to push her in the forehand. She produced a few more errors on that wing,” according to her official website.
Another EZONE player, Maria, overwhelmed Portugal’s Michelle Larcher De Brito in the second round as well. After taking the first set with two breaks at 6-3, she put on an exemplary performance of serving accuracy, getting 93% of her first serves in, to take the lead in the second. Maria defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-1.
Martina Hingis, who returned to WTA tour, competes in the first round of women’s and mixed doubles on Friday.
