Wawrinka Takes the Stage at Madrid Open Final
- 13 May 2013
Stanislas Wawrinka (VCORE Tour 97) had a great start to this year’s clay-court season with his 2013 Portugal Open title. Following the tournament in Oeiras, he also reached the final at Mutua Madrid Open last week.
Aiming for the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophy, Stan made it through two seeded players, with clay-court expert Rafael Nadal waiting for him. After overcoming world No. 8 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals, he faced Tomas Berdych—last year’s finalist. It was a tough match, and the opponent’s aggressive serves put Stan under serious pressure, but he delivered four breaks during the match to win by 6-3 4-6 6-4.
It was Stan’s second time playing in a final in the Masters 1000 series, and he was the runner-up. As a result of his performance, Stan’s ATP ranking jumped up to 10th from 15th.
In women’s events, two YONEX players, Ana Ivanovic (EZONE Xi 98) and Angelique Kerber (VCORE Xi 100), faced off in the quarterfinal. Ana played persistently, overcoming Angelique with six breaks by 6-3 6-1. Ana’s WTA ranking moved up to 13, and now the two of them are ready for Roland Garros.
