About Wimbledon

Venue: All England Club

Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam event played on grass court.
Wimbledon is the acknowledged premier tennis tournament in the world. The All England Lawn Tennis Club hosts The Championships.

Courts

The main show courts, Centre Court and No. 1 Court, are normally used only for two weeks a year, during the Championships. The remaining seventeen courts are regularly used for other events hosted by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. However, the 2012 Olympic Games will be held for the second time in three months in Wimbledon.

The main court, Centre Court, was opened in 1922. This change of venue was due to the huge crowd pressure at Worple Road to see the French phenomenon Suzanne Lenglen, who is the winner of Wimbledon in 1919~1923 and 1925.

The second most important court is No. 1 Court. The court was constructed in 1997 to replace the old No. 1 Court. The old No. 1 Court was destroyed because of its capacity, it was too small for a lot of spectators. The court became a favorite of many players and they said it was unique and friendly. The new No. 1 Court has a capacity of approximately 11,000.

The third-largest court, No. 2 Court is called "Graveyard of Champions" due to its reputation that many seeded players have lost their matches there in the early rounds.

Beside the No.1 Court, there is a giant television screen on which important matches are broadcast. Fans watch from the area of grass officially known as the Aorangi Terrace, but more commonly called Henman Hill. The "hill" takes its name from local favourit Tim Henman.

Grounds

The nineteen courts used for Wimbledon are all purely of rye grass. This means that serve and volley players are no longer dominant on the surface which now going well with baseliners. Wimbledon has been fall from being the fastest Grand Slam to the 3rd fastest, behind the U.S. Open and Australian Open.

Traditions

*Colours and uniforms
Dark green and purple are the traditional Wimbledon colors. Since 2006 Championships, ball boys and ball girls have oficially wore the new navy blue and cream coloured uniforms from American designer Ralph Lauren.

The All England Club requires players to wear "almost entirely white" clothing during matches. No other Grand Slam tournament has such a strict dress code for players.

*Strawberries and cream
For the spectators, strawberries and cream is the traditional snack at Wimbledon because it is the very season for the strawberries. Approximately 28,123 kilograms (62,000 pounds) of strawberries and 7,000 litres (1,540 gallons) of cream are sold each year during the Championships.
