10th Title for Lee, 1st for Goh & Lim at Malaysia Open

20 January 2014

World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei (VTZF, SHB01LTD) captured his tenth and seventh consecutive title of Malaysian Open and he was joined in the winners’ circle by fellow Malaysian Goh V Shem (ARC11)/Lim Khim Wah (VTZF), who won their first ever Superseries title in front of their home crowd.

The men’s singles final was the same card as the Superseries Finals last month, Chong Wei and Tommy Sugiarto (ARC11). Tommy was leading the first game by 19-18, however, Chong Wei’s accurate shots and powerful attack toward his body troubled Tommy to grab the first game by 21-19. Chong Wei dominated the second game by winning 14 consecutive points from 2-4 with more speedy shots. The final score was 21-19 21-9. He has been unbeaten at Malaysia Open since 2008 and it was the year he began the almost uninterrupted reign at the world No. 1 ranking.

The Malaysian 24-year-old duo, V Shem/Khim Wah advanced to the final of Superseries event for the first time. Their impressive campaign started from the first round winning against Mathias Boe (VT80)/Carsten Mogensen (ARC-FB, SHBF1NLTD). Against Chinese big duo, Biao Chai/Hong Wei in the final, the first game became a see-saw game. From 19-all, V Shem/Khim Wah controlled the speedy driving shot rally to finish it by 21-19. The opponents led almost whole the second game, however, the Malaysian duo kept playing aggressively. They won 4 consecutive points from 17-18 to take home title. It was the first time for Malaysian to win men’s doubles title at Malaysia Open since 2010, when Koo Kien Keat(NR-ZSP, SHBF1NLTD)/Tan Boon Heong(NR-ZSP, SHBF1NLTD) did.

In the mixed doubles, Christinna Pedersen (NR800, SHB-01LX)/Joachim Fischer Nielsen defeated No. 1 seed Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei of China with 21-10 21-12 in the semifinal. They became runners-up after playing a tough final against another Chinese duo, Xu Chen/Ma Jin in the final by 21-11 17-21 21-13.

Japan’s Ayaka Takahashi /Misaki Matsutomo also became runner-up in the women’s doubles after playing the nail-biting match against China’s Bao Yixin/Tang Jinhua, 21-19 14-21 21-13.
