Coco Vandeweghe Grabs Topshelf Title; Angelique and Martina Runners-Up at Aegon International
- 23 June 2014
This past weekend, June 21st and 22nd, saw a number of YONEX’s strong female players in the finals at a couple of tournaments.
Firstly, 22-year-old American tennis player, Coco Vandeweghe (EZONE Ai 98) won her first WTA title. Moving all the way up from the qualifiers through to the final, Coco demonstrated exceptional performance. The final match saw Coco up against another YONEX player, Zheng Jie (EZONE Ai 98, POLYTOUR SPIN). While both players were un-seeded, Jie is a grass expert, but that didn’t stop Coco from taking the match confidently. Coco pushed strongly with powerful serves, scoring on her first service an incredible 27 of 28 times. She also scored eight aces, and didn’t face any break points from her opponent at all, neatly tying up the game in 70 minutes at 6-2 6-4.
Coco talked about the secret to her success on the WTA website, “I got the first set and I thought to myself, 'One set to the good, one more to go, try and get the early break now and keep the pressure on her.’
“I was really just thinking about it step by step, just like how I would play in any match."
Meanwhile, at the Aegon International, Angelique Kerber (VCORE Xi 100), made her way to the finals. Facing Caroline Wozniacki in the semifinal, the two had a tough three-set match. Coming up from a set behind, Angelique managed take the match from her former-world-No.1 opponent with 54 winners, closing the match at 3-6 7-6(3) 6-3. "Caroline is a tough opponent and I think we played a tough match and at a really high level. I enjoyed it out there and I'm happy to be in the final. I'm feeling very good on grass and I like the surface - it suits my game," commented Angie on her match on her official website.
The final put Angelique against Madison Keys. Angelique demonstrated a fine performance, nearly winning in the tough match against the young American.
The un-seeded Martina Hingis (EZONE Ai 100, POLYTOUR PRO 125, SHT-PRO) and her partner Flavia Pennetta beat the second-seeded pair of Katarina Srebotnik and Kveta Peschke in a close semifinal match, 6-4 4-6 10-8. Martina and Flavia had a tough match with Hao-Ching Chan/Yung-Jan Chan in the final, coming out as the runners-up in the tournament in the end.
With all of these players achieving great results, their performances at Wimbledon will certainly be something to see!
