Kerber Becomes Finalist at Premier 5 Tournament in Doha

17 February 2014

One of the WTA Premier 5 tournaments, Qatar Total Open 2014, was held in Doha last week.  26-year-old German Angelique Kerber (VCORE Xi 100) made it to her second final this season, following the Apia International Sydney last month.

Angelique maintained solid performance, reaching the final with straight-set victories in all her matches. In the quarterfinals, she won an especially outstanding victory against Petra Cetkovska, who defeated 2014 Australian Open champion Na Li in the third round. Capitalizing on seven of 11 break chances, Angelique overpowered the opponent, ending the match at 6-1 6-0.

Angelique’s WTA ranking moved up to 8th from 9th after competing in the final in Doha. She is going to play at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships as the sixth seed this week.

In the ATP Challenger Tour, Pierre-Hugues Herbert (VCORE Tour G) of France captured both singles and doubles titles at the Open BNP Paribas Banque De Bretagne Quimper. Meanwhile, 16-year-old Spaniard Jaume Antoni Munar Clar, who has been using YONEX’s EZONE Ai 100 racquet, showed impressive performance in Grade 1 of ITF Junior tournament in Morocco, winning the double crowns.
