Raising the Next Grand Slam Champ: Sascha Bajin Trains Local Coaches and Juniors in Japan

14 September 2018

Tokyo, Japan – Caught up in the buzz surrounding Naomi Osaka and her historic win at the US Open, her hitting partner and coach, Sascha Bajin, took time out of a busy Toray Pan Pacific Open schedule to teach local coaches how to raise the next Grand Slam champion. The clinic was held on September 13th, which drew a crowd of over 140 local instructors, coaches, juniors and media to the SPORU SHINAGAWA OIMACHI Sports Complex.

Using Bajin’s detailed guidance, four of the top juniors in the country demonstrated Osaka’s actual practice routine. “It’s important to establish a routine with the players,” Bajin instructed, as he went in depth about the 30-minute gym, 2-hour on-court schedule the 2018 US Open champion maintains before matches.

In the middle of the Q&A session following the seminar, Bajin recalled a story from the US Open when he prepared a large monitor for her to play video games to help her relax her pre-match nerves. He emphasized how a coach’s duties extends outside the court, which is equally vital when supporting players and their anxieties. This among other stories gave insight into the unique tennis theory of one of the world’s top coaches.

Bajin and Osaka take on their next challenge at the Toray Pan Pacific Open starting Monday, Sept. 17th in Tokyo.
