Kerber Progresses to Second Round at Roland Garros

28 May 2013

Following in the wake of Ana Ivanovic (EZONE Xi 98) and Sabine Lisicki (VCORE Tour 97, PTGSPN), who won their openers on the first day of Roland Garros, world eighth-ranked Angelique Kerber (VCORE Xi 100) also made a good start by progressing to the second round.

Angelique faced fellow German Mona Barthel in her first round match. She proved a tough opponent who played aggressively with 37 winners during the match, but Angelique put in a robust performance to take the lead in her service games by winning 70% of the points on her first serve. She also won three of her 12 break chances to secure a hard fought victory. The match lasted a shade over one and a half hours, giving Angelique her first victory at the 2013 Roland Garros with a 7-6(6), 6-2 score line. In the next round, she faces Jana Cepelova from Slovakia, and this will be the first time they have met each other in their careers.

Two EZONE players also had their opening matches yesterday. China’s Zheng Jie (EZONE Xi 98, PTGSPN) overpowered Vesna Dolonc of Serbia in straight sets [6-4, 6-1]. Up-and-coming eighteen-year-old Australian Nick Kyrgios (EZONE Xi 98) defeated the Czech player, Redek Stepanek, in a tough three setter [7-6(4), 7-6(8), 7-6(11)]. This was his first entry in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, and Nick battled his way to a first victory at Roland Garros.

On day three, two YONEX players are set to appear on court. Ninth-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka (VCORE Tour 97) meets Thiemo De Bakker from the Netherlands, and the No. 12 seed, Maria Kirilenko (EZONE Xi 98, PTGP125), plays Portugal’s Nina Bratchikova.
