To the Quarter-Finals: Pico Drives Through in Doubles

02 June 2014

May 30th, 31st and June 1st, marked days six, seven and eight respectively of this year’s Roland Garros tournament. Juan Monaco (VCORE Xi 98) had a good weekend in doubles, blazing through rounds two and three with his partner Maximo Gonzalez. The two managed to clinch a win one set behind in round 2 against the fourteenth-seeded pair of Eric Butorac and Raven Klaasen, claiming victory in the last two sets. The final score was 5-7 6-4 6-4. The two then confidently handled the German and French duo of Andre Begemann and Robin Haase round 3, the final score coming to 6-1 3-6 6-3. Between defeating the fourteenth seed in round 2, and coming out on top over the pair that defeated the second seed in round 3, Pico and his partner are proving that they have what it takes to take on strong players. They will face Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the quarterfinal. This will be the second time the Argentine pair has made it to a Grand Slam quarter-final since reaching the semi-finals in the US Open in 2008.

Angelique Kerber (VCORE Xi 100) made in through to the fourth round, beating out Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova in an hour and 47 minutes in round 3, and just in time, as the day’s events were put to a stop due to a lack of light immediately following the German’s victory. This match was their fifth, and Angie took it nicely, landing six break points, hitting one ace, and snagging 17 winners. The final score was 7-5 6-3. She lost in the fourth round against Eugenie Bouchard, but has showed really great performance throughout this tournament.

Boy’s Singles also got started, with young Jaume Antoni Munar Clar (EZONE Ai 100, PTGP125) getting off to a good start in round 1, defeating Petar Conkic in straight sets, 6-2 6-4. He’s pairing up in doubles with Pedro Martinez Portero against Daniel Appelgren and Wei Qiang Zheng. His further achievements should prove to be promising.
