- 02 September 2013
Two VCORE Tour users, Lleyton Hewitt (VCORE Tour 97) and Stanislas Wawrinka (VCORE Tour 97), advanced to the fourth round of the US Open last weekend. Lleyton remained in competition with a giant-killing victory against the No. 6 seed, Juan Martin Del Potro, while Stan has progressed to the fourth round for the second consecutive year.
The 2001 US Open winner Lleyton was pitted against Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro in Friday’s second round match. It proved a thrilling contest between two former US Open champions. Although Lleyton took the first set, the Argentine grasped back the initiative with his booming serve, taking the second and third sets. But the Australian veteran played exceptionally to even up the score, pushing his opponent from side to side. Del Potro made many unforced errors due to Lleyton’s effective stroke work. Finally, Lleyton clinched a huge victory against the seeded player in five sets [6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-1] in a little over four hours. In the third round on Sunday, Lleyton defeated Russia’s Evgeny Donskoy with a 6-3, 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-1 score line to reach the last 16 for the first time since 2006, when he went on to the quarterfinals.
No. 9 seed Stan faced Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus in the third round. He got off to a flying start to take the first two sets 6-3 6-2, capitalizing on four of his 12 break points. The next two sets proved much tougher for both competitors, and the Cypriot player put up a solid defence to remain in contention, winning the third set at 7-6(1). However, Stan didn’t allow his opponent to retain the initiative, and eventually took the fourth after a hard-fought battle lasting 72 minutes. The final score was 6-3, 6-2, 6-7(1), 7-6(7).
