Hlavackova and Coric Become Champions at the US Open

Date
09 September 2013

The Czech doubles specialist, Andrea Hlavackova (RQiS 2 Tour, PTGP125), accomplished a tremendous achievement at the US Open to claim two doubles titles. She captured her second Grand Slam crown in the women’s doubles following her first title at Roland Garros in 2011, and also won her first mixed doubles event in a Grand Slam tournament.

In the women’s doubles, Andrea and her partner, Lucie Hradecka, overcame strong rivals, Serena and Venus Williams, with a straight sets semifinals victory [6-4, 6-2], gaining a measure of revenge for their 2012 losses to the famous sisters in the finals at both Wimbledon and the London Olympics. The Czech duo continued to play steadily, with enough in reserve to defeat the Australian pair, Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua, in the final with a 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-4 score line. With this second Grand Slam career title, they became the only all-Czech team to win a US Open title in the history of the tournament.

Pairing with Max Mirnyi of Belarus, Andrea also won the mixed doubles final against Abigail Spears and Santiago Gonzalez by 7-6(5), 6-3. She is the first woman to claim both the women’s and mixed doubles titles at the US Open since Cara Black in 2008.

Not only did YONEX’s top players such as Andrea and Stanislas Wawrinka (VCORE Tour 97) – who had a thrilling contest with No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic in the semifinals – impress, but so too did our junior players with some outstanding play at the US Open. Fourth seeded Croatian, Borna Coric (VCORE Tour 97, PTGSPN), clinched his first junior Grand Slam title, defeating Thanasi Kokkinakis of Australia in the final with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory. This championship title of Borna’s rounds off a sterling year for the YONEX juniors, who have now earned titles in all the junior Grand Slam tournaments this year; Nick Kyrgios (EZONE Xi 98) became the Australian Open winner and Belinda Bencic (EZONE Xi, PTGH125) claimed the crown at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
