Strong Starts in Singles
Men’s singles saw Danish Jan O. Jorgensen (VOLTRIC 80 E-tune, POWER CUSHION COMFORT TOUR) go up against Hong Kong’s Hu Yun (NANORAY 750, Yonex Shoes) in Group A. The World No. 3 Dane keenly took control of the court with pin-point strikes, wrapping the affair up in a brisk 22 minutes with a razor-sharp smash into the back corner of Yun’s court. The final score came to 21-8 21-5.
Group B saw another Denmark versus Hong Kong clash, this time between Viktor Axelsen (ARCSABER 11, POWER CUSHION 65) and Ng Ka Long Angus (DUORA 10, POWER CUSHION COMFORT TOUR). Viktor was not overtaken once throughout the first game and maintained focus during tough points in the second to prevail with a final score of 21-13 21-17.
Coming off of a run to the YONEX-SUNRISE Hong Kong Open final, Indian P. V. Sindhu (VOLTRIC Z-FORCE II, POWER CUSHION 02 LTD) got her Superseries Finals campaign off to a roaring start with a 12-21 21-8 21-15 win over Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi (VOLTRIC 70 E-tune, Yonex Shoes) in women’s singles Group B. 2016 Yonex Denmark Open champ Akane rushed to a confident first-game win, but Sindhu took control in the remaining 2 games, refusing to be overtaken by the Japanese youngster.
Dominating in Doubles
Danes reigned supreme in women’s doubles, with Kamilla Rytter Juhl (DUORA 10, POWER CUSHION 65) and Christinna Pedersen (DUORA 7, POWER CUSHION 65) picking up a 21-7 21-17 win over Malaysia’s Vivian Hoo and Khe Wei Woon in Group B. The Danes secured the opening game with their masterful navigation of the court; Kamilla delivering the winning shot with a sublime push at the net. Game 2 saw the Malaysians take control in the first half, but the Danes would come out on top after a fierce mid-game exchange of points.
Defending mixed doubles champions Chris Adcock (VOLTRIC Z-FORCE II, POWER CUSHION AERUS 2 MENS) and Gabrielle Adcock (VOLTRIC Z-FORCE II, POWER CUSHION AERUS 2 LADIES) won their first match in Group B against Ayane Kurihara (ARCSABER 11) and Kenta Kazuno. The English proved too strong for their Japanese opponents, prevailing at 21-15 21-9.
