World No. 1 Naomi Osaka (JPN) leads Team Yonex into Roland Garros after putting together her best clay season performance to date. The current World No. 1 is 7-1 on red clay this year and has won the past two Grand Slams.
“Of course for me, I would love to have the career Grand Slam,” said Osaka. “It would be even better to make it a calendar. That's definitely my goal.”
While Osaka would need to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon to complete the career Grand Slam, Angelique Kerber (GER) is only one Roland Garros title away from completing hers. Her best performance in Paris came last year when she was one set away from reaching the semifinals.
“I'm trying not to put too much pressure on myself,” said Kerber, who fought a foot injury and illness over the past couple of weeks. “If I had the chance to complete the career Grand Slam, that would be amazing, but I'm not thinking about this right now.”
Belinda Bencic (SUI) and Marketa Vondrousova (CZE) are players to look out for on the women’s side. Bencic was ranked 72 at this time last year but has already defeated seven top-10 opponents and is currently ranked 15 in the world.
19-year-old Vondrousova has made deep runs in the majority of tournaments she has entered this year and is sitting at a career-high ranking of 38 entering Roland Garros.
On the men’s side, Stan Wawrinka (SUI) will be looking to find his footing on arguably his best surface. The 2016 Champion is ranked 27, his highest ranking since coming back from injury last year, and has already defeated a top-10 opponent on clay this season.
ATP Next Gen players Denis Shapovalov (CAN) and Frances Tiafoe (USA) highlight the young, up-and-coming stars featured in the men’s draw. The duo will be seeded for the first time in their careers at Roland Garros.
Shapovalov reached a career-high ranking of 20 in April and Tiafoe cracked the top-30 in February after his quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open.
Jaume Munar (ESP) and Hubert Hurkacz (POL) have also built momentum before the year’s second major, reaching their career-high rankings this month. The pair will face major tests early on in Paris, as Hurkacz drew top-seeded Novak Djokovic, while Munar is also listed in the top portion of the draw.
