Australian Open 2016: Stan Wawrinka Records 400th Tour-Level Win

Over the weekend at the Australian Open saw YONEX players make steady progress into the tournament’s second week.



Swiss World No. 4 Stan Wawrinka (VCORE Duel G 97, POWER CUSHION ECLIPSION) continues to explosively propel himself up through the men’s singles draw with another straight set win, this time against Czech Lukas Rosol. Stan the Man commanded the match with cool confidence, collecting points with his trademark backhand along with some impressive forehands to match. Stan remained resolute as the match entered into its decisive tiebreaker, sealing a 6-2, 6-3, 7-6(3) win with his huge backhand. The Stanimal launched off an incredible 18 aces and 45 winners as he secured his place in the fourth round. This marked Stan’s 400th tour-level win, making him the 12th active player to do so.

In women’s singles Angelique Kerber (VCORE Si 100, POLYTOUR FIRE 120) is into the quarterfinals with successive straight set wins in round 3 and round 4. Against American Madison Brengle, the German put on something of an encore of their last meeting at the Brisbane  International, where Angie won 6-3 6-0. Dominating from behind the baseline, the German hit 27 winners to Brengle’s 13 en route to a speedy 6-1, 6-3 victory in under an hour. Round 4 saw her face off against fellow German Annika Beck, facing some resistance in the first set but coming through to dominate in the second half, securing her spot in the quarterfinals with a final score of 6-4, 6-0.

Daria Gavrilova (EZONE DR 100, POLYTOUR 125) made waves in the first week of this year’s Australian Open, proving to be a potent giant killer, making it past No. 6 seed Petra Kvitova and No. 28 seed Kristina Mladenovic in impressive fashion. Her third round encounter with Mladenovic proved to be a nail-biting affair, with a final set that ran for 96 minutes. Competing backed by the ardent support of the crowd, Daria came out victorious at 6-4, 4-6, 11-9. The Russian-turned-Australian recorded her best result at a Grand Slam this weekend, reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open.
