Nehwal Defends Swiss Open Title & Indonesian Duo Hit Winning Streak

As the last tournament of the Europe Tour, Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold was held from March 13th to 18th.



In the women’s singles, Saina Nehwal (NR700RP) defended the title and the All England champions Tontowi Ahmad (AT900-P) and Liliyana Natsir(NR700RP) won back-to-back title in the mixed doubles.

After celebrating her 22nd birthday with a victory in the semis, #3 seed Nehwal had a good start in the final against #2 seed Wang Shixian with leading the first game, 11-3. She finished the game with 21-19 and continued to lead in the second. After 15-15, Nehwal had much more a lead to capture the title with 21-19, 21-16 surrounded by huge supporters in the arena.

Indonesian duo Ahmad and Natsir won the final against Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkam of Thailand 21-16 21-14, which was the fastest match of the day, 23 minutes.

In the men’s doubles, Japan’s Naoki Kawamae (VT70) and Shoji Sato (VT80) defeated Malaysia Open champions Fang Chieh Min and Lee Sheng Mu of Chinese Taipei with 21-13 21-14 to clinch the title.
