BWF Dubai World Superseries Finals: New and Returning Champions for 2015

The 2015 BWF World Superseries Finals came to its electrifying conclusion on Sunday, December 13th, welcoming returning champions and ushering in newcomers to the winners’ podium.

The men’s singles final was a clash of former junior world champs with Danish ace Viktor Axelsen (ARCSABER 11SHB-87EX) facing off against Kento Momota. While Kento had appeared at the Superseries Finals before, this year marked his first time advancing to the men’s singles finals. Viktor on the other hand made it through to the finals in his first appearance at the tournament this year, defeating World No. 1 Chen Long en route in the semifinal impressively in straight games, 21-12 21-17.

Both players competed on even footing as the match got underway, keeping pace with one another and exchanging points. However, it was Kento who managed to secure strong control of the match half-way through game 1 and didn’t look back. Tightening up his game, the Japanese harnessed the match’s momentum and road it straight to the end, securing his first Superseries Finals title with a straight score of 21-15 21-12.

Adcocks

English husband-and-wife pair Chris Adcock (VOLTRIC Z-FORCE ⅡSHB-02MX)/Gabrielle Adcock (VOLTRIC Z-FORCE ⅡSHB-02LX) also made history, becoming the first English athletes to win in across any discipline at the Superseries Finals. The two faced off against Korea’s Ko Sung Hyun and Kim Ha Na, seizing control of the match early on and never relinquishing it. The couple was unfazed at anything the Koreans threw at them, and racked up points with keen attacks while capitalizing on their opponents’ errors. It was a calculated shot at the net by Chris that earned the pair their first Superseries Finals trophy, the final score coming to 21-14 21-17.

Mohammad Ahsan Hendra Setiawan

2013 champions Mohammad Ahsan (NANORAY 900, SHB-75EX)/Hendra Setiawan (NANORAY 900, AERUS) made their triumphant return to the Superseries Finals winners’ podium in men’s doubles. On their way to the final, the Indonesians beat World No. 1 Lee Yong Dae and Yoo Yeon Seong after tough full-game semifinal match. Recovering from that encounter, the duo secured a stunning victory over Chinese Biao Chai and Wei Hong. Coming back from a set down, the pair dazzled with their trademark brand of high-intensity, high speed, and pin-point badminton that left their opponents bewildered in the remaining two games. Commanding strong leads coming off their game-1-loss, the matched was deiced when Mohammad sent a sublime hairpin over the net, closing the match at 13-21 21-14 21-14.

In women’s doubles, Danish pair Kamilla Rytter Juhl (NANORAY 900, SHB87LTD)/Christinna Pedersen(NANORAY 800SHB-02LX) had a strong run at this year’s Superseries Finals, placing as finalists.

This marks the end of major tournaments for 2015, with the ranks of Yonex players all boasting incredible results throughout the year. The stars now have their eyes on the next big tournament, the 2016 YONEX All England Open Badminton Championships, in March.
