First Round at the 50th U.S. Open Concludes with Over 20 Players from #TeamYonex Advancing

Flushing Meadows, NY --

Day 1
It was hot and humid for the opening round of the U.S. Open. For the second Grand Slam in a row, Stan Wawrinka (VCORE PRO 97) drew 8th-seeded Grigor Dimitrov in the first round. Like he did at Wimbledon, Wawrinka - the 2016 U.S. Open Champion - upset Dimitrov to move onto the second round.

Two American's joined Wawrinka in the second round after their straight-set victories. California’s Steve Johnson (VCORE 98) defeated Denis Istomin and will face [9] Dominic Thiem in the next round, while Virginia’s Denis Kudla (VCORE 98) defeated Matteo Berrenttini to set up a second round match with [3] Juan Martin Del Potro.

On the women’s side, it was an exciting first round for two young stars. 19-year-old Vera Lapko (EZONE 100 / POLYTOUR PRO 125) and 21-year-old Anhelina Kalinina (VCORE SV 100 / POLYTOUR SPIN 125) recorded their first-ever U.S. Open main draw victory on Monday.

In one of the most impressive performances of the day, Australia’s Daria Gavrilova (EZONE 100 / POLYTOUR PRO 125) did not drop a game en route to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Sata Sorribes Tormo.

Day 2
Coming off her 2018 Wimbledon Championship, Angelique Kerber (VCORE Prototype / POLYTOUR FIRE 125) was able to shake off some nerves early to secure a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Margarita Gasparyan. Naomi Osaka (EZONE 98 / POLYTOUR PRO 125 / REXIS 130), Caroline Garcia (VCORE 100 / POLYTOUR STRIKE 125), and Eugenie Bouchard (VCORE 100), who is new to Team Yonex, also followed with straight-set wins.

In another notable match, Monica Puig (VCORE 100) was able to match what Gavrilova did on Day 1. The Puerto Rican secured a 6-0, 6-0 over Mona Barthel to move onto the second round for the first time since 2014.

On the men’s side, Frances Tiafoe (VCORE PRO 97 / POLYTOUR PRO 125) won his first-career match at the U.S. Open in four sets. The American upset 29th-seeded Adrian Mannarino and will face Australia’s Alex de Minaur in a battle of the next generation’s stars.

To wrap up first round action, 23rd-seeded Hyeon Chung (VCORE PRO 97) and 30th-seeded Nick Kyrgios (EZONE 98 / POLYTOUR PRO 125) both advanced with four-set victories.
