2019 Wimbledon: Kerber is out to defend, Wawrinka looks to complete his Career Slam

WIMBLEDON — Angelique Kerber (GER) is coming off a runner-up finish in her grass court tune-up in hopes of defending her 2018 Wimbledon trophy, where she defeated Serena Williams in straight sets for her third Grand Slam title. Seeded fifth, Kerber’s draw has a projected third and fourth round match-up with former Wimbledon champions Maria Sharapova and Williams, respectively.

After winning the Australian Open, Roland-Garros, and the US Open in the last five years, Stan Wawrinka (SUI) is just one Wimbledon title away from his Career Slam. Wawrinka, who is at his highest ranking since coming back from injury, is in [4] Kevin Anderson’s quadrant and will play qualifier Ruben Bemelmans in the first round.

While grass has been the most difficult surface for Wawrinka, Nick Kyrgios (AUS) is returning to his favorite surface and has a potential second round match up with [3] Rafael Nadal. A teenager at the time, Kyrgios defeated then-World No. 1 Nadal in four sets, reaching the quarterfinals in 2014.

Having won the previous two hard court Grand Slams, Naomi Osaka (JPN) is again a favorite to come out on top. Although the World No. 2 suffered a third round loss at the French Open and has recorded just one victory on grass this season, Osaka’s powerful game is suited for the fast, groomed courts at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

Seeded for the first time at a major, Roland-Garros finalist Marketa Vondrousova (CZE) will be looking to win her first career match at Wimbledon when she takes on Madison Brengle. The rising Czech star cracked the WTA top-20 after her performance in Paris and is sitting at a career-high ranking of 16.

Wimbledon, the world’s oldest tennis tournament, will begin on July 1. Follow @Yonex_Tennis on Twitter and Instagram for daily updates from #TeamYonex.
