2020 US Open: Down to the last eight

NEW YORK – Denis Shapovalov and Naomi Osaka are into the quarterfinals at this year’s US Open.

Comfortable and composed
[4] Naomi Osaka (JPN) said her attitude and composure on court was the best it has been in 2020, as the 2018 champion defeated [14] Anett Kontaveit in just over an hour on Wednesday night.

Osaka was reliant on her serve the entire match, dropping just five points and never facing a breakpoint with the ball in her hand. She will be looking for her first career victory over American Shelby Rogers, who she has a 0-3 record against, for a spot in the semifinals.

Fearless with flair
Although no fans are allowed at this year’s US Open, [12] Denis Shapovalov (CAN) was impressing with flashy forehands and jumping backhands.

Shapovalov recorded 52 winners and was only broken once in the 3.5-hour upset over [7] David Goffin. Also reaching the quarterfinals in the doubles draw, Shapovalov came to the net nearly 50 times in the match, winning 71% of those points.

He will play [20] Pablo Carreño Busta in his first-career Grand Slam quarterfinal. Although the higher seed, Shapovalov has a 1-3 record against Carreño Busta, with his only win coming on clay in 2019.
