LONDON – In just his third main draw appearance at Wimbledon, World No. 5 Casper Ruud recorded his maiden Wimbledon victory. Ruud, who took time to recovery after his runner-up result at Roland-Garros, used only four days of preparation on grass to get ready.
Seven other players, including 21-year-old Sebastian Baez and Tim Van Rijthoven also recorded their first win at Wimbledon. Van Rijthoven is on a 6-match winning streak after winning the ATP 250 event in 's-Hertogenbosch two weeks prior.
Denis Shapovalov and Nick Kyrgios went the distance in their opening round matches. Both players have had their best result at a major at Wimbledon, with Shapovalov reaching the semifinals last year.
Angelique Kerber needed just 16 minutes to win the first set in her first-round match. The 2018 Champion is playing on her favorite surface and is one of five past champions in the draw.
Kaja Juvan and Marie Bouzkova recorded upsets over the 23rd and 7th seed, respectively. It is the second-straight year that Juvan has defeated in the opening round.
