2022 Wimbledon: Tatjana Maria continues “crazy” run, into the semifinals

LONDON – “One year ago, I just gave birth,” said Tatjana Maria on court after her quarterfinal victory over Jule Niemeier. “It's crazy.”

Maria made her Grand Slam debut at Wimbledon 16 years ago and had tallied a 12-34 at the majors. She had never made it past the third round at a major and is currently ranked outside the top-100. “Crazy” is a good word to describe her run to the semifinals so far.

It certainly hasn’t been easy for the mother of two. For the third time this tournament, Maria dropped the first set but battled back to take the next two. This time, Maria also had to rally from a break down in both the second and third sets.

“I'm happy that I could do it. I mean, even that I was 4-2 down in the third set, I kept going and I kept fighting.”

Maria has stuck with what has worked – variety and consistency. She has committed fewer unforced errors than her opponent in each of her matches and has kept them guessing with her toolbox of spin shots.

The German will play [3] Ons Jabeur in the semifinals, who defeated Marie Bouzkova in three sets.
