Belinda Bencic (EZONE DR 100, POLYTOUR HS 125) grasped a comeback victory against Japan’s Misaki Doi to book a place in the third round. The opening set proved to be a tight affair, with the Swiss teen dropping it by a slim margin. The second came even closer, with the World No. 12 triumphing in a tiebreaker, pushing through to a third set. A chance materialized for the Rogers Cup champion in the third set’s second game where Belinda grabbed a break point to power her way through to the end. Using the new EZONE DR, Belinda saved four break points in the third set to secure a 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-3 victory.
In men’s doubles the French pair of Pierre-Hugues Herbert (VCORE Tour G) and Nicolas Mahut swiftly made their way into the second round with a straight set victory over Guillermo Duran and Victor Estrella Burgos that lasted just over an hour. The AEGON Championships winners grabbed four aces and refused their opponents any breakpoints to grab a 6-3, 6-4 win.
Martina Hingis (EZONE DR 100, POLYTOUR PRO 125, SHT-PROL) and Leander Paes commenced their mixed doubles campaign, wasting little time to triumph over American pair Claire Liu and Taylor Harry Fritz, advancing to round 2 with a 6-2, 6-2 score line.
