No. 9 seed Stanislas Wawrinka (VCORE Tour 97) secured a huge victory against last year’s semifinalist, Tomas Berdych, in the fourth round on Day 9 of the US Open. It was a thrilling match for both players, but Stan showed his resolve to overcome a tough rival, laying down 14 service aces and 36 winners during their confrontation. With this 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(6), 6-2 win, Stan has reached his first quarterfinals since 2010.
Talented young YONEX players, Belinda Bencic (EZONE Xi, PTGH125) and Anhelina Kalinina (VCORE 100S, PTGSPN), advanced to the third round of the junior girl’s singles on Tuesday. They were also impressive with doubles victories in their openers. Top ranked Belinda is aiming to win her third consecutive junior singles Grand Slam tournament – a feat that hasn’t been achieved since Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria claimed three titles in 1990.
Following her third round win in the women’s doubles on Monday, Andrea Hlavackova (RQiS 2 Tour, PTGP125) also notched a victory in the mixed doubles quarterfinals on Day 9. She and her partner, Max Mirnyi of Belarus, faced the fourth seeded pairing of Kveta Peschke and Marcin Matkowski. With solid performances throughout the match, the pair capitalized on all five break points to overpower their opponents in straight sets [6-1, 6-2]. The Czech doubles specialist plays two doubles matches, the women’s doubles quarterfinals and the mixed doubles semifinals, on Wednesday. Paired with Lucie Hradecka, Andrea faces the No. 3 seeds, Nadia Petrova and Katarina Srebotnik, in the quarterfinal match.
