Career

Elena-Gabriela Ruse bursted on the tennis scene in 2021, where she won her first WTA singles title as a qualifier. Ruse had an unorthodox climb up the ranks - when her junior career ended, she did not have a professional ranking.

Ruse battled at the ITF and qualifying level for nearly 6 years before stringing together 7-straight victories to win the German Open in July 2021. The next week in Palermo, Ruse again battled through the qualifying draw and reached the finals. That momentum helped Ruse qualify for her first US Open a month later. She went on to break into the top-100 and finish the year ranked 87.

Ruse hails from an athletic family, where her father was a football player and mother a former gymnast.
