Pedersen Wins, Ahsan/Setiawan & Intanon Runners-up at Indonesia Open

Hot on the heels of YONEX OPEN JAPAN 2014, the Indonesia Open Superseries Premier was held from June 17-22 in Jakarta. YONEX player Christinna Pedersen (NANORAY 800, SHB-01LX) and partner Joachim Fischer Nielsen won the mixed doubles title, defeating China’s Xu Chen/Ma Jin, 18-21 21-16 21-14. YONEX players Mohammad Ahsan (NANORAY 900, SHB87LTD)/Hendra Setiawan (NANORAY 900, SHBF1NLTD) and Ratchanok Intanon (VOLTRIC Z-FORCE 2, SHBF1NLX) were runners-up.

After defeating the strong Korean pairs of Ko Sung Hyun/Kim Ha Na in the quarterfinal, and Lee Yong Dae/Shin Seung Chan in the semifinal, No. 4 seed Christinna/Joachim faced No. 3 seed Chen/Jin in the final. After losing the first game, 18-21, the Danish pair began to employ short and deep shots effectively to lure their opponents around the court. They took the second game with a driving shot winner, 21-16. Christinna/Joachim were off to a good start in the final set with a 5-0 lead, and were able to maintain the lead until the end. The final score was 18-21 21-16 21-14.

Mohammad/Hendra advanced to the final for their second week in a row. They won two full-set matches in the quarterfinal and semifinal in front of their home crowd, but lost to Korea’s Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong in the final.

Ratchanok advanced to the women’s singles final after winning several tough matches. She faced Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi (VOLTRIC 80) in the first round, who defeated Ratchanok in the Malaysia Open in January. Though a tough match Ratchanok won this time with a score of 21-18 19-21 21-18. She also played a full-set match against world No. 2 Wang Shixian of China in the semifinal, with Shixian taking the first game, 21-19. Ratchanok powered through the second and final games refusing her opponent the lead in the decider and closed the match 19-21 21-16 21-13. Although she lost to Li Xuerui in the final, she feels her performance is back in top-form now.
