Rising Stars Sindhu & Marin Advance to QFs with Big Wins

It’s day four of BWF World Championships 2013 in Guangzhou. Young YONEX stars won their second round matches against players of higher rank. Sindhu P. V. (NR700RP) of India defeated former world champion Wang Yihan of China while Spanish Carolina Marin (VTZF,SHB01LX) won a challenging match against Sung Ji Hyun of Korea.


No. 10 seed Sindhu, who won the Malaysia Grand Prix Gold in May, fearlessly dominated the entire match against Yihan, the former world No.1 and 2011 World Championships winner. The 18-year-old closed the match with 21-18 23-21 to continue her first run at her World Championships. Carolina, however, had already defeated another seeded player in the previous round. Playing against Hyun, the world No. 6 Korean, Carolina fired an incredible 18 smash winners. Carolina faced opponent’s match point in the third game 20-17 but came back to win 5 consecutive points and finished the grueling seventy-four-minute long match, 13-21 21-13 22-20.


Mathias Boe (VT80) / Carsten Mogensen (ARC-FB, SHBF1NLT), defeated China’s Chai Biao / Zhang Nan, 21-15 21-18.
