Roland Garros: Stan Wawrinka Attains Second Grand Slam Title

June 7th, on the historical red clay courts of Roland Garros, Stan Wawrinka (VCORE Tour G, SHT-PRO) pulled off another show-stopping performance, winning his second Grand Slam title and first at Roland Garros.

His opponent was none other than World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. The Serb had denied Stan his second Australian Open title earlier this year, but Stan the Man—who beat fellow countryman Roger Federer in the quarterfinal—was dominating throughout the tournament’s two weeks, and playing at the top of his game. The Swiss, who is now ranked as No. 4 in the world rankings, left the Serb with little answers, coming down strong with power, aggression and steady play. While Djokovic took the first set, Stan cranked up the aggression in the second—grabbing a pivotal breakpoint—the set point—en route to earning four consecutive points from 5-4 30/0.

Set 3 saw Stan continue to pour pressure on the World No. 1, dominating with his famous backhand, firing off 15 winners en route to sealing the set, leading Djokovic 2 sets to 1. Moving into the fourth and final set at 5-4, Stan was serving for his champion point. With the utmost of composure, the Swiss hit a backhand down the line—his 60th winner of the match—to win the title. With a winner-count that doubled that of his opponent, Stan also won nine aces to the Serb’s six, and fended off eight breakpoints while earning four. The final score came to 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

This title is another to add to the Swiss’ growing number of achievements, including his 2014 Australian Open title, his country’s Davis Cup title, and several others. Backed up by Yonex gear, Stan continues to dazzle on the court.

In the boy’s tournament, Jaume Munar (EZONE Ai 100, POLYTOUR PRO 125) and fellow Spaniard Alvaro Lopez San Martin won the double’s title. The un-seeded pair triumphed over No. 4 seeds William Blumberg and Tommy Paul in straight sets at 6-4, 6-2.
