LONDON – The 134th Championships has finally arrived at the All England Club after a year-long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kyrgios is Back
The return of Wimbledon also marks Nick Kyrgios’ (AUS) return to tournament play. Kyrgios has not competed outside of Australia since the pandemic began.
The Aussie opens Round 1 action with a rematch against [21] Ugo Humbert. Kyrgios and Humbert played a thrilling, five-set match in the second round of this year’s Australian Open, where the home crowd pulled Kyrgios through in the end.
Kerber Finding Form
[25] Angelique Kerber (GER) was struggling to find her form in 2021. The three-time Grand Slam Champion had just nine wins this year leading up to her Wimbledon warmup tournament.
However, Kerber put an end to her slump and made a statement at the Bad Homberg Open on her home soil. The German defeated Katerina Siniakova, 6-3, 6-2, to win her 13th WTA title, lifting her first champions’ trophy since winning Wimbledon in 2018.
Bencic, Shapovalov Top Seeds for Team Yonex
[9] Belinda Bencic (SUI) is looking to make the second week of a major for the first time since her quarterfinal run at the 2019 US Open. Bencic opens her quest for a first major title against Kaja Juvan in arguably the toughest quarter of the draw.
22-year-old [10] Denis Shapovalov (CAN) pulled out of Roland-Garros to recover and focus on the grass season. The dynamic, young lefty has a first-round matchup with Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Under 20
Marta Kostyuk (UKR), Clara Tauson (DEN), and Katie Volynets (USA) are all making their first main draw appearance at Wimbledon.
Kostyuk made her breakthrough earlier this month in Paris, reaching the second week of Roland-Garros. Tauson won her first WTA title earlier this year in Lyon, which catapulted her into the top-100 at just 18-years-old. Volynets earned her main draw bid through the qualifying event, where she did not drop a set in three matches.
Rest and Recover
Four-time Grand Slam Champion Naomi Osaka (JPN) is preparing for the Olympics, which will be held in a couple weeks in her home country. Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka (SUI) is recovering from a recent foot injury and hopes to return during the hard-court swing.
