US Open 2016: Stan Wawrinka into Semifinal for 2nd Straight Year

Stan Wawrinka (VCORE Duel G 97, POWER CUSHION ECLIPSION) has powered through into his third total and second straight US Open semifinal after a 3-hour 4-set thriller against towering Argentine Juan Martin del Potro.

Late Night Victory

Stan the Man went up against del Potro in a tense semifinal that ran until 1:22 am—“Thank you everybody for staying so late,” said Stan to his fans in the post-match interview. The match opened up as a very see-saw affair, with Stan powering back from a 0-3 deficit in the first set. Both players played neck and neck, running into a tight tiebreaker. The first set went to Stan, after taking the tiebreaker 7-5. Del Potro would draw even in set 2, but Stan remained strong in the third.

“I tried to make longer rallies, I tried to go back a little bit to make him play more balls, keeping more on the backhand side and dictate,” commented Stan on his tactics going into the third set. Keeping his opponent moving, Stan gained the upper hand. Stan The Man racked up 10 aces, and 53 winners en route to his 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory. He clutched the final point with his signature backhand.
