Wawrinka Wins First Grand Slam Title in Melbourne

Stanislas Wawrinka (VCORE Tour GSHT-PROEX) won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open on Sunday, January 26, 2014. Stan defeated top seeded Rafael Nadal with a 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 score line, overcoming the world No.1 Spaniard for the first time in their 13th match-up.

In his first-ever Grand Slam final, Stan showed outstanding form against the toughest rival, hitting 19 aces and 53 winners. Capitalizing on 5 of 15 break points, he captured one of the most significant titles in his 36th Grand Slam appearance. Stan ranking moved up to World No.3 and Swiss No. 1 after becoming the 36th man in the Open Era to claim his first grand slam title in his first finals appearance.

Stan’s breakthrough makes him the first player to defeat the world No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in a Grand Slam tournament since Sergi Bruguera at the 1993 Roland Garros. This victory also marks Stan’s first-ever streak of three consecutive wins against world top 10 players, Novak Djokovic, Tomas Berdych and Rafael Nadal.

With the 2014 season underway Stan remains undefeated. He has now won the Aircel Chennai Open and the Australian Open with his new VCORE Tour G racquet. YONEX could not be more proud of Stan’s success in the New Year. A big thanks to everyone for supporting Stan during his competition in Melbourne!
