Wimbledon: Martina Excels in Mixed Doubles; Upsets From Team YONEX Juniors

The eighth day at Wimbledon saw junior players advance in the early rounds, along with an impressive showing in mixed doubles.

No. 7 mixed doubles seeds Martina Hingis (EZONE Ai 100, POLYTOUR PRO 125, SHT-PROL) and Leander Paes have advanced to the quarterfinals with a victory over Artem Sitak and Anastasia Rodionova. The Swiss-Indian duo needed only 48 minutes to dispatch the Oceanic pair, and refused their opponents any chances to break, while securing four breaks for themselves. The match closed at 6-2, 6-2. The doubles veterans won this year’s Australian Open title, and have secured all their victories at this year’s Championships without dropping a set.

Team YONEX players are making strides in junior events as well, with a couple of major upsets. 17-year-old wildcard Anna Brogan (EZONE Ai 100) from Glasgow turned heads in the first round of girls’ singles in front of her fellow Brits, defeating No. 1 seed Marketa Vondrousova in under an hour without losing a set, dropping only three games to record a 6-1, 6-2 score. She met with Katarina Zavatska (EZONE Xi 100, POLYTOUR PRO 125, POLYTOUR SPIN) in her round 2 match on day 8, fending off eight break points to advance at 6-1, 6-3. Qualifier Victoria Kuzmova (VCORE Si 100, POLYTOUR PRO 125) also pulled off a first-round upset, defeating No. 4 seed Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets at 7-6(4), 6-4 recording ten aces to the Russian’s three. She went on to face American Raveena Kingsley in round 2, winning at 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4.

The boys doubles event commenced on day 8, with English duo Fin Bass (VCORE Tour G, POLYTOUR SPIN) and Alexis Canter beating Emil Reinberg and Stefanos Tsitsipas at 6-4, 7-6(4), deflecting six break points en route.

Stan Wawrinka (VCORE Tour G, SHT-PRO) will face France’s Richard Gasquet today as he aims for his first Wimbledon crown. The World No. 4 is boasting sensational performance at this year’s Championships, making it to the quarterfinals without losing a single set.
