The fifth-seeded Czech pair—Andrea Hlavackova (RQiS 2 Tour, PTGP125) and Lucie Hradecka—advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s doubles at the US Open on Monday. They defeated Polona Hercog and Lisa Raymond in straight sets [6-3, 7-6(4)] in their third round match.
Andrea and Lucie, who were finalists in the 2012 US Open, have maintained excellent form in this year’s Grand Slam tournaments. Having reached the semifinals at Roland Garros and the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, they compete in the US Open with great momentum. In their next match, however, Andrea and her partner face tough rivals: the third seeded pairing of Nadia Petrova and Katarina Srebotnik.
Meanwhile, China’s Zheng Jie (EZONE Xi 98, PTGSPN.) advanced to the women’s doubles quarterfinals with partner Sania Mirza of India. They won a 6-2, 6-3 victory against the No. 6 seeds, Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Kveta Peschke in the third round.
Belinda Bencic (EZONE Xi, PTGH125) has kicked off the junior events by winning her opening match in the girl’s singles. With seven service aces and seven winners, she overcame Raveena Kingsley, a local American competitor, with a 6-2, 6-4 win in 54 minutes. Belinda is aiming for her third junior Gland Slam title, following victories at Roland Garros and Wimbledon earlier this year.
Due to inclement weather, the women’s singles fourth round match of Ana Ivanovic (EZONE Xi 98)(SRB) was postponed until Tuesday. Upcoming appearances also include Stanislas Wawrinka (VCORE Tour 97) and Lleyton Hewitt (VCORE Tour 97), both of whom will compete in the fourth round of the men’s singles on Day 9.
