Indonesian players took 2 titles at the Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold which was held from September 25th to 30th.
Former world No. 3 player and No. 5 seed Sony Dwi Kuncoro (VT80) faced No. 2 seed Sho Sasaki of Japan in the quarterfinals and defeated him by 21-17, 14-21, 21-13. After winning the semifinal against China’s Huan Gao by a straight 21-19, 21-8, he faced fellow Indonesian Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka (ARC10). Sony was ousted from the top level by his injury in recent years, however, he overcame it and reached the final of Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold in May. Just after that, he captured the title of Thailand Open in June. Although Sony lost the first round of YONEX OPEN JAPAN 2012 against Boonsak Ponsana, who became the runner-up, with a very close 14-21, 21-17, 21-18, he has been keeping his good form. Facing against younger Dionysius, Sony knew what he had to do and finally, he won his second title in this year with a score of 21-11, 21-11.
In the mixed doubles, top seeded Tontowi Ahmad (AT900P) and Liliyana Natsir (NR700RP) added their fourth title of the year after defeating Muhammad Rijal (ARC10) and Debby Susanto (NS9900), 21-19 21-14. They won all the matches with straight sets throughout the tournament.
YONEX Chinese Taipei Open Grand Prix Gold will start from this week, October 2nd to 7th. Sony, Dionysius and other players will compete in this event. Stay tuned!
