2021 Canadian Open: Giorgi finds new gear

MONTREAL – Italian Camila Giorgi won the biggest title of her career in Montreal at the 2021 National Bank Open, a WTA 1000 event.

Unseeded, Giorgi began her title run with a straight-set victory over ninth-seeded Elise Mertens. The 29-year-old only dropped one set the entire week – in the semifinals against Jessica Pegula – and recorded three top-20 victories en route to her third career WTA title.

“It's just amazing,” said Giorgi. “I'm very happy for what I did this week.”

In the finals, Giorgi matched up well against this year’s Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova. Giorgi was unfazed by Pliskova’s resume. She hit seven fewer unforced errors and three more winners than the World No. 7 to win her first career title on hard courts.

Giorgi will move up 37 spots to World No. 34, just 8 spots away from her career-high ranking of 26, which she reached in October 2018.
