Wimbledon 2016: Week Two Gets Underway

The members of Team Yonex continue to excel on the famous grass courts of the All-England Club as the 2016 Wimbledon Championships enter into the second week.

Aussie Action

Nick Kyrgios (EZONE DR 98, POLYTOUR PRO 120) has powered his way into Wimbledon’s fourth round with a win over veteran Feliciano Lopez. The 21-year-old Australian boasted a strong service game, sealing the opening set with an ace—one out of 27 throughout the match. After being drawn even by his Spanish opponent, Nick attacked the remaining sets in signature style, dazzling the crowd and forcing errors on his opponent with his sublime combination of explosive power and flair. “I got a lot more out of my serve and from the baseline,” commented Nick on his serve on the official Wimbledon website. Booking the first win of his career over the Spaniard, Nick advanced with a final score of 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4. He will meet Andy Murray in round 4.

Fellow Australian Lleyton Hewitt (VCORE Tour 97, Yonex Shoes) emerged out of retirement to play in the men’s doubles tournament, winning his first round match partnered with compatriot Jordan Thompson. The all-Australian duo faced the all-Spanish team of Nicolas Almagro and David Marrero in a tight encounter that ended at 6-7(6), 6-4, 19-17 in favor of the Australians.

Yonex Ladies Advance

Angelique Kerber (VCORE Si 100, POLYTOUR FIRE 120) prevailed in an all-German women’s singles third round match against Carina Witthoeft. While the opening set was a vicious battle for supremacy, the No. 4 seed proved her greater experience over her younger opponent, forcing her into errors and getting ahead with a handful of winners. After securing the pivotal opening set, the Australian Open champion cruised through the second to win 7-6(11) 6-1.

CoCo Vandeweghe (EZONE DR 98) is into the fourth round for a second straight year, upsetting No. 6 seed Roberta Vinci with a straight 6-3, 6-4 victory. The American won 86% of her first serve points and landed 21 winners in her encounter against the World No. 7 Italian.

Meanwhile in women’s doubles, Martina Hingis (EZONE DR 100, POLYTOUR PRO 125POWER CUSHION ECLIPSION L) and Sania Mirza are into the third round with a win over Japanese pair Eri Hozumi and Miyu Kato. The duo cruised through to victory in 8 minutes short of an hour, 6-3, 6-1.
