YONEX All England Open: Team Yonex Charges into Quarterfinals

March 5th brought more explosive matches from the world’s top shuttlers in round 2 of the YONEX All England Open Badminton Championships.

English shuttler Rajiv Ouseph (NANORAY 900, SHBF1NLTD) continued to dazzle in front his home crowd in men’s singles, earning a ticket to his first All England quarterfinal with a win over India’s H.S. Prannoy (VOLTRIC Z-FORCE Ⅱ). However, it was Prannoy that got the edge over the English shuttler in game 1, collecting points with dynamic smashes and precise net play. Rajiv turned the tables in game 2, retaliating with pin-point smashes and unpredictable play, seizing it without once being led. The Englishman grasped a stunning lead from 2-6 in the decider landing 9 consecutive points, and rode the momentum to a 17-21 21-19 21-18 victory, backed by the cheers of local fans. Lin Dan (VOLTRIC Z-FORCE Ⅱ) came out on top over fellow countryman Tian Houwei, moving closer to his sixth All England crown. The five-time world champion excelled in long rallies, and energized the crown with intricate and stunning moves. Super Dan collected point after point with composure, the pressure growing heavier on his opponent as the clock ticked. In a protracted rally on his 20th point, Lin Dan confidently closed the match with a thunderous smash, 21-15 21-19.

Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon (VOLTRIC 70 E-tune, SHB-02LX) earned her way into the women’s singles quarterfinals maintaining her strong performance, this time against Karin Schnaase (NANORAY 800). The 20 year old commanded the match with heavy attacks from above, denying her opponent any chances. Charging forward, Ratchanok continued to lob the pressure down on her German opponent, taking the match in a swift 37 minutes, 21-10 21-8.

Round 2 saw many victories for Danish players, among them veteran doubles pair Mathias Boe (ARCSABER 11, SHBSC6iEX)/Carsten Mogensen (ARCSABER 11SHB87LTD) against Indonesia’s Angga Pratama (NANORAY 900SHB87LTD)/Ricky Karanda Suwardi (NANORAY 900SHB-87EX). While the Indonesians closed in with agile plays to take the lead, the Danes remained calm throughout the match, inviting increasing errors on the part of their opponents, gradually overpowering them. By the end of the match the Danes had a good read on their opponents, dominating in the match’s second half, taking it 21-17 21-14.

Japanese pair Takeshi Kamura (ARCSABER 11)/Keigo Sonoda (ARCSABER 11) brought about yet another upset over Korea in the tournament, defeating No. 6 seeds Kim Gi Jung/Kim Sa Rang. The two boasted nimble movement, firing potent smashes from both around the net and the very back of the court. Commanding a superb tempo over the match, and impressing spectators, the duo was met with lively applause upon their 21-14 21-19 win.

Off the court, Peter Gade and Taufik Hidayat made an appearance at the Yonex booth. Met with a large gathering of fans spanning all ages, the two legends of badminton gave autographs and posed for pictures.
